12th Aug 2009Good Girl Hall of Famer # 3: Thao Nguyen, Indie Rocker
There might not be anybody cooler in alt rock right now than Thao Nguyen of Thao With the Get Down Stay Down. Thao began playing the guitar at 12, and performing pop-country tunes with tunes around Falls Church, Virginia. Thao practiced her strumming while working at the Laundromat owned by her mom. Can you just picture her picking out indie riot tunes while surrounded by a ton of whites? She went on to school at the College of William & Mary, where she majored in Sociology and Women’s Studies. Along the way, she met Willis Thompson and Adam Thompson, who became band mates of The Get Down Stay Down. She so knows how to groove a guitar, and her breezy singing style makes you feel as happy as you do when you’re riding a Ferris Wheel. Check out “Bag of Hammers” here, in a youtube where Thao’s wearing a nifty homemade looking shirt and jamming in a bookstore: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62mIL3ZK42o comments |
